What is Rolfing?

Rolfing is a sophisticated system of hands-on therapy that has the ability to improve structural alignment, functional movement, and overall wellbeing.

One of the distinguishing features of this therapy is that it is designed as a process, or series of sessions, that systematically and methodically works through the whole body to establish an order— an order that expresses itself not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.

To evoke a more ordered structure, Rolfing works with the body’s fascial system. Fascia surrounds, supports and penetrates all of the muscles, bones, nerves, and organs of the body. Both vastly interconnected and accessible by skillful touch, Rolfing works on this web-like complex of connective tissues to release, realign and balance the body.

When the body is out of alignment it creates inefficiency and imbalance resulting in stiffness, discomfort and loss of energy. As the body is aligned and balanced, good posture becomes effortless.

Rolfing is not, as many people think, deep tissue massage. It has more in common with Osteopathy and Physiotherapy than massage, though it does contain elements of each of them.

It is a unique therapy having its basis in Bio-mechanics but is influenced by understandings from other disciplines, including Hatha Yoga and Cranio-Sacral therapy. Come visit our Austin office.
